Carrying 275 lbs on a 5’ 10” frame made shopping a nightmare. Nothing fit me. I tried to hide that fact by wearing the biggest, baggiest shirts and pants I could find, hoping nobody would notice.

I only owned 3 outfits I felt remotely confident in. I wore them everywhere I went and hoped nobody would notice. I conveniently came down with a headache whenever I got invited to go anywhere physical activity might be on the agenda. I did whatever it took to shield myself from a potentially embarrassing situation.

It was exhausting. So at 26-years-old, I decided it was time to reconsider my relationship with working out… “Maybe fitness will be easier now that I’m an adult,” I thought to myself.

I was a different person after high school and college. It made sense that I’d struggle less with those unpleasant years behind me. On the flip side, I knew working out would likely get more difficult once I hit middle age. I’d already heard from plenty of people that things get tough if you let yourself go past 30. So I went out and got a gym membership. I bought a whole new wardrobe of workout clothes. I did the whole nine yards. I didn’t want to burn out right at the get-go, so I told myself I’d start slow.

I committed to hitting the gym for one hour, three times per week -- either before work in the morning, or after work in the evening. I made up my mind… THIS would be the time I finally get in shape.

Boy! Was I wrong!

NOTHING about my new routine came easy. First of all, making time to exercise even three times a week felt impossible with my full-time work schedule. I tried setting my alarm and waking up at the crack of dawn. But I always ended up hitting the snooze button and telling myself I’d work out later.

Exercising after work was even harder. By the time I left the office, I barely had enough energy to go home and cook dinner… much less spend an hour killing myself in the gym.

And when I finally did make time to exercise, my hour in the gym felt miserable… I felt ridiculous fumbling with all the weights and machines. I couldn’t actually work out for more than a couple minutes before breaking down into a pile of sweat and fat. I never seemed to get stronger, and my appearance never changed. Over the next few years, I went through this embarrassing routine at least half a dozen times or more… Forgetting my previous attempts and failures. Finding a new excitement and hope to get in shape. But ultimately ending up right back at square one… growing more and more depressed as I went.

Meanwhile, my physical condition was only falling further downhill. I was fatter, weaker, and more unhealthy than ever. Like I said before, dieting never did much for me. But after my 30th birthday, it stopped working altogether. I tried all the popular weight loss diets. I stopped eating carbs. I cut down my calories. I even bought a special calculator to count the “points” in all my food. I was lucky to lose 2 or 3 pounds after dieting for a whole month. Sometimes I even gained weight after dieting.

It made zero sense! And I was running out of patience.

Aside from the physical pain and discomfort, my toxic lifestyle took a terrible toll on my emotional health too. I lied to my co-workers when they invited me to lunch, telling them I had a late breakfast or that I packed a lunch from home. Then I was lying again to my wife and kids when I got home. Telling them I grabbed dinner at the office, and watching them chow down while I sat like a cold, lifeless zombie on the couch.

My work performance took a nosedive. I couldn’t focus on anything. And I turned into pile of anxiety and stress 24/7, which almost cost me the most important relationships in my life.

But the worst part of these hellish “diets” wasn’t how awful they made me feel… or what they forced me to do to the people around me… the fact was, that they ultimately made me fatter!

Every time I came off one of my absurd starving streaks, I’d rebound and gain all the weight back ten times faster than I lost it… It was a vicious cycle.

And I could feel the damage it was doing to me. Like some hardwired, biological instinct, my body was absorbing fat whenever it got the chance… probably because it knew I’d idiotically go back to starving it soon. When I finally put an end to the madness, I was worse off than ever.
